South Beach Casino & Resort began operations on May 28, 2005. It stands on the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation Reserve, on Highway 59 north of Winnipeg. Seven First Nations own the resort together: Black River, Bloodvein, Brokenhead, Hollow Water, Little Grand Rapids, Pauingassi and Poplar River.

In Manitoba's gaming timeline, South Beach was the second First Nations casino, opening in 2005 on Brokenhead Ojibway First Nation land. Aseneskak came before it, in 2002. Sand Hills followed in 2014.

Two provincial bodies stand behind the games. The Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba, the LGCA, regulates gaming. Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, known as MBLL, conducts and manages the games. At First Nations casinos it does this in premises owned by a licensed gaming operator.

The building and its rooms

The building follows an Art-deco design with a tropical atmosphere. The Tropical Pool has a cascading waterfall, a sauna and a hot tub. Pool hours are 7 am to 10 pm, then 10 pm to 11 pm for adults only. No lifeguard is on duty. The casino floor covers over 40,000 square feet and is entirely smoke-free.

For meetings and gatherings, the Mother Earth Ballroom has 5,000 square feet and holds up to 300 attendees. It divides into two smaller spaces, the Sweetgrass and Sage rooms. Smaller groups can use the Cedar Room boardroom, which seats 17.
